SYMPTOMS
Sugar cravings
Everyday reasons for sugar cravings, what to ask your doctor to check, and which nutrients have been studied.
Also described as: sugar crav, craving, crave sweets, sweet tooth, crave sugar, carb crav
Common everyday causes
Blood-sugar swings or insulin resistance
When blood sugar spikes and drops, energy, focus and cravings follow. Insulin resistance can build for years before glucose looks abnormal. Ask for HbA1c and fasting insulin (with glucose).
Stress load (your stress response on overdrive)
Ongoing stress keeps cortisol and adrenaline up: wired-but-tired, poor sleep, cravings, gut upset, shedding and lower libido. No routine test is reliable (a morning cortisol is only a snapshot).
Not enough restorative sleep
Under 7 hours, or broken sleep, lowers energy, focus, mood and immune defenses and raises cravings the next day. No test. Track sleep for a week; see a doctor if it lasts more than 3 months (CBT-I is first-line).
Sensitivity to your cycle’s hormone shifts
In the week before a period, falling estrogen and progesterone change serotonin, fluid balance and pain sensitivity. Calcium, B6 and magnesium have the best evidence. Track symptoms for 2 cycles; ask your doctor if they disrupt daily life (PMDD is treatable).
Higher androgens (PCOS pattern)
In PCOS, insulin resistance raises androgens, which drive acne, hair changes, cravings and irregular cycles. Ask for total and free testosterone, SHBG, and HbA1c/insulin.
Low magnesium
Magnesium relaxes muscles and nerves and is used in hundreds of energy reactions. Diet, stress, alcohol, acid reducers and water pills all lower it. Ask for a red-blood-cell (RBC) magnesium test; serum magnesium misses most low levels.
