SYMPTOMS
Skin issues (acne, dry, eczema)
Everyday reasons for skin problems (acne, dryness, eczema), what to ask your doctor to check, and which nutrients have been studied.
Also described as: acne, breakout, pimple, dry skin, eczema, rash, skin, dermatitis, rosacea
Common everyday causes
Skin barrier and dry air
Hot showers, harsh cleansers, dry air and low essential-fat intake strip the skin barrier. No test.
Low zinc
Zinc runs immune cells, skin repair and hair growth. Plant-based diets, acid reducers and gut conditions lower it. Ask for a plasma zinc test.
Low omega-3
Omega-3 fats (EPA/DHA) calm inflammation and support brain, skin and joints. Most people who rarely eat oily fish run low. Ask for an omega-3 index test (a finger-prick test works).
Sensitivity to your cycle’s hormone shifts
In the week before a period, falling estrogen and progesterone change serotonin, fluid balance and pain sensitivity. Calcium, B6 and magnesium have the best evidence. Track symptoms for 2 cycles; ask your doctor if they disrupt daily life (PMDD is treatable).
Higher androgens (PCOS pattern)
In PCOS, insulin resistance raises androgens, which drive acne, hair changes, cravings and irregular cycles. Ask for total and free testosterone, SHBG, and HbA1c/insulin.
Stress load (your stress response on overdrive)
Ongoing stress keeps cortisol and adrenaline up: wired-but-tired, poor sleep, cravings, gut upset, shedding and lower libido. No routine test is reliable (a morning cortisol is only a snapshot).
